When it’s urgent: the “call now” list
Call promptly (same day if possible) if you have:
- sudden blur or rapid vision change
- flashes, new floaters, or curtain-like shadows
- significant eye pain
- new severe redness with light sensitivity
- injury, chemical exposure, or foreign body sensation that won’t resolve
Optometrist vs ER: how to decide
- ER: major trauma, chemical exposure, severe injury, rapid vision loss
- Optometrist (often appropriate): many red eye issues, sudden blur without trauma, flashes/floaters, painful eye symptoms
If you’re unsure, call and describe what you’re experiencing.
What happens if you need a specialist?
If the exam suggests specialist care is needed, a clinic can refer you to the right next step.
